YUZEN

Decorating items with Japanese paper has a long history and includes everything from boxes to cards to teapots. Covering eggs with this paper is an especially challenging craft as it involves fitting flat paper to the shape of a not-so-flat egg. What makes paper-covered eggs so appealing is the illusion that the pattern on the paper continues around the ends of the egg. These hand-made eggs make unique, exquisite gifts for Easter and other occasions.

The eggs I decorate are large chicken eggs typically measuring 2 ¼” high and 5 ½” in circumference. Each one has been hand-picked for surface complexion, blown out, cleaned and thoroughly dried. The eggs are covered with hand-cut yuzen paper using rice paste as an adhesive and are coated with 20 layers of water-based polyurethane. As these are hand-made works of art, some have minor imperfections visible only upon close inspection.

The following eggs were made in the fall and winter of 2006. Click on each picture to see a larger image of the egg. If you can't see much of where the cuts are, that means I did a good job! BTW, I am in the process of making more eggs, and will post them here when they're done.
